RALEIGH, NC, July 13, 2007 -- Michael Zachary has joined Tompkins Associates (Tompkins), the leading total supply chain consulting and integration firm. As Senior Vice President of Global Supply Chain Services, Zachary will develop and implement Tompkins’ ports and maritime consulting strategy with an eye toward supply chain visibility and security.
“In the post 9/11 world,” says Zachary, “a visible supply chain is a safer and more efficient supply chain. It’s another line of defense that also has the ability to increase effectiveness, ensure product integrity and lower the total cost of transportation.”
Zachary’s background and knowledge in ports and maritime security issues make him a perfect match for the Tompkins maritime initiative.
“We are pleased that Mike has decided to join the Tompkins team,” says Jim Tompkins, President and CEO. “With his unparalleled expertise, we will be diving deeper into the maritime world and ensuring greater security for our clients’ supply chains, as well as for the global community. He will take us to the next level in supply chain visibility.”
Prior to joining Tompkins, Zachary was responsible for infrastructure planning, coordinating facilities, and logistics planning with regional government and maritime industry officials for the Port of Tacoma in the State of Washington.
He also served as the program manager for the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle’s Operation Safe Commerce Phase II, a federal maritime container security initiative. Zachary currently serves as a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Commercial Operation Advisory Committee (COAC) and is past chairman of the Freight Planning and Logistics Committee for the National Academies of Science’s Transportation Research Board. As a long-time maritime industry consultant, his career achievements include management of 62 strategic master plans for seaports and more than 200 individual port and rail intermodal terminals throughout the world.
Zachary’s background includes executive-level management positions with several companies such as Dallas-based i2 Technologies, Inc., BRW/Dames & Moore/URS Corp., and CH2M-Hill. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, an Executive MBA from St. Mary’s College of Moraga, and an American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Professional Port Manager (PPM®) certification. He is a licensed Professional Industrial Engineer in the states of Washington and California.
