Look Beyond RFID Technology

White Paper Focuses on Operations’ Role in RFID Implementation

RALEIGH, NC, July 21, 2005—Always lead with operations, advises supply chain expert Tom Singer in the latest Tompkins Associates’ white paper, Looking Beyond the Technology on RFID Projects. With retail and government supplier mandates looming, it has become even more important for operations to play a key role in RFID implementation.

“As companies dive into the mechanics of RFID, a technology-centric view is often difficult to avoid,” Singer says. “But having a purely technological approach is risky because organizations tend to perceive RFID as a tactical solution to meet mandates, rather than as a strategic tool to grow the enterprise.”

Looking Beyond the Technology on RFID Projects also explores why RFID project teams that lead with operations have the edge. Advantages include:

  • A basic grasp of RFID’s potential benefits and limitations within the distribution center;
  • The right project team with the right operational commitment;
  • An appreciation of RFID’s potential beyond the distribution center;
  • An innovative approach to flow and processes;
  • More realistic expectations;
  • Access to living business cases; and
  • Special insight into handling exceptions.

This new white paper also addresses the challenge of Return on Investment (ROI) for RFID. While some suppliers may be able to achieve substantial internal benefits from their RFID implementations, Singer notes that ROI might not be a realistic near-term goal for others. “The evolutionary pace of RFID in the supply chain is rapid,” Singer says. “What is unobtainable today might be very practical in another year or two, and organizations should account for this evolution in their strategic plans.”
