 Why eBooks?
Tompkins Press now offers eBooks to our readers. Why are we providing this option? After entering the marketplace in 2007, eBooks have increased in usage and sales each year. In some markets, sales of eBooks have actually risen 200 percent in the past 4 years. Some reasons why the popularity of eBooks is increasing are:
- Convenience: After ordering, you can get an eBook instantly. That means you don’t have to wait for it to ship as you would with traditional print books ordering, and it saves you a trip to a bookstore.
- Price: eBooks are usually less expensive than their print counterparts. eReader devices are also going down in price as competition between them increases.
- Portability: You can take your entire eBook library anywhere you go, stored on your eReader device.
- Interactivity: eBooks have many interactive properties compared to traditional print books. eBooks allow you to do keyword searches for certain terms, let you bookmark certain pages that you can easily click back to later, and even save the place you left off when you’re done reading so you can find it instantly again later. Some eReaders let you "loan" a book out to another person’s eReader device, so you can share your eBooks just like you share your print books.
- Accessibility: eBooks can be read on many other devices besides just dedicated eReaders. Many cellphones and tablet PCs have eBook reader software. Some eBook vendors have free downloadable software that allows you to read eBooks on your own desktop or laptop computer. So even though you might not own an eReader, you are likely to have a device that allows you to download and read eBooks.
